Happy Newtrittion Year

Happy Newtrittion Year

It’s the New Year and time for some newtrition inspiration. The word nutrition comes from the Latin word nutrire, to feed or nourish. So in the spirit of nourishment I would like to suggest some resolution solutions for you.

  1. Eat more fish (shameless Salty’s plug here). Truly this is one of the most powerfully healthy foods you can eat. Try to eat fish at least three times a week, two at the very least. You may not feel amazingly different but the computer inside your body will take note and start recalculating its future moves. Fish and seafood are like medicine but, instead of stopping disease like a drug, they help prevent disease in the first place and keep you healthy. So give it a try and if you don’t want to cook seafood yourself we will be happy to do it for you.
  2. Find new beverages to substitute for pop and juice. They contain too much sugar and too many empty calories that can add up over time. Instead why don’t you knock yourself out and try something different? How about the alternative of sparkling water with some delicious pomegranate juice and a squeeze of lemon, a nice slice of orange and a dash of bitters or some Roses Lime Juice and a squeeze of lime? At this time of year I keep a big pitcher of cold filtered water in my refrigerator with cloves and orange slices in it to infuse it with winter flavors. Lately in the afternoon I have taken to drinking hot water with a few dashes of orange bitters. It’s a delicious warm treat.
  3. Have dessert when you are out, but don’t keep sweets in your home where you can’t resist them. Our fabulous Pastry Chef Jena Sorbera would love to hear me say, “Don’t skip it.” And I completely agree. It’s not that you can’t have dessert at all, just wait and have a special ONE that is fabulous.

  4. Try some new vegetables. Introduce yourself to your Green Grocer and ask for advice on seasonal local vegetables or a new recipe for preparation of a vegetable you have never tried. Keep a bunch of chopped, washed fresh veggies in your refrigerator for munching on. They make a perfect easy to grab snack.
  5. Try some interesting new grains like barley, quinoa, buckwheat or farro. Make a big pot of steel-cut oats and freeze single portions for breakfast. Heat it up in the morning, add some fruit and nuts and get your day off to a great start.

Enjoy experimenting with these inspirations. They are so delicious you won’t even notice they are good for you. Have a Happy Newtrition Year everyone!
