WINE BLOG - PortlandSeptember 2010SEATTLE AND PORTLAND - Both Salty's on Alki in Seattle and on the Columbia in Portland are thrilled to announce that we have earned an Award of Excellence in Wine Spectator magazine for our wine programs. Simply stated, the leading wine magazine in the industry thinks we have some of the most outstanding wine lists in the world. Their standards are exacting, rating the accuracy, content and overall execution of the wine program. This marks the eighth consecutive year we have reached this lofty plateau. We are in great company with the finest restaurants in the world. Visit www.winespectator.com/webfeature/show?id=43194 to read more on the 2010 awards. One man's ceiling is another man's floor. There I was, flush with pride from national recognition when a couple dining on the Alki deck questioned my choices and my commitment to Washington wine. I knew this could be a learning experience, so I listened carefully. Well, I learned plenty. I didn't sell either of their favorite wines, and it's too dark on our deck at 9:30 p.m. to read a wine list and find the hidden gems. I have work to do and I look forward to doing it for guests who are as opinionated and passionate as myself. I always encourage wine lovers to have their own opinions and to share their excitement. Conversations like this inspire and motivate me. First, I have a passion for wine and find it rewarding to bring people to wine without pretense and rules. Second, I am trying to keep pace with the excellence that our Chef Jeremy McLachlan has achieved with his creativity and execution. I owe it to all of our guests to provide world-class wine to accompany that top flight cuisine they find on their plate. We have been having great success with our flight/taster program at all Salty's this year which encourages our guests to enjoy a three-ounce sample size of two wines chosen because they pair well with the featured entrée. This month we are offering a taster of Rosé and a Pinot Noir to complement our Grilled Halibut with Portobello Mushrooms presented with Creamy Polenta, Truffle-Infused Vinaigrette and Dehydrated Grape Tomatoes. What's next for our wine program? You can be sure it will involve having fun, discovering and sharing favorites. Peruse our wine lists and be sure to make a reservation today. With more than 40 microbreweries in the Portland metro area, Salty's on the Columbia, a Portland waterfront restaurant, celebrates their luck in geography by featuring local beers on draft, and several times a year the restaurant partners with a local brewery to create an original dinner paired with craft brews. It doesn't get much more local than Alameda Brewhouse, located on NE Fremont in Portland, a close neighbor to Salty's. On Thursday, May 27 at 6:30 p.m. Salty's on the Columbia will welcome their neighbor, Alameda Brewhouse, for a Spring Brewer's Dinner. Head Brewer Carston Haney produces memorable, seasonal beers that have won the Gold Medal at the 2003 GABF and the Silver in 2006 and 2008 in the foreign-style stout category. Salty's Executive Chef Dana Cress will prepare five courses, with the help of Sommelier Matthew Carter to pair Alameda's beers with each dish. Here's the menu. The price is just $65 per person for five courses and six of Alameda's exceptional beers. Please call (503) 288-4444 for reservations today (21 and over only). Seating is limited.
